Where Does Lint Come From?

The Best Way to Iron Your Clothes

There isn't anything quite like the crisp and clean look of freshly ironed clothes. Properly ironing is not hard to do albeit a bit cumbersome and something many people put off doing for way too long. If ironing is too much for your schedule and you need a professional, NJ Laundry Services is here for you.

Materials

Iron
Ironing Board
Water, preferably in a spray bottle
An old cloth, for when working with your more delicate items
Starch, if needed.

6-Step Ironing Process

Step One: Gather your materials and have them close by so you aren't having to fumble around a hot iron.

Step Two: Sort your ironing pile by material. Different types of material require different methods for ironing and temperatures.

Step Three: Wait till the iron is ready. Most irons have a feature that will alert you when it is ready to go. Ironing with a cold iron will only be a waste of time.

Step Four: Follow the proper method for the material you are ironing. When in doubt, check the label of the clothing piece for material and care instructions.

Cotton: High Heat and slightly damp
Polyester: Medium Heat and slightly damp
Rayon, Corduroy, Satin, and Silk: Low heat and turned inside out.
Wool and Lace: Low heat with a damp cloth between the iron and wool item.

Step Five: Follow the proper ironing methods based on the clothing type.

Shirts: Start with ironing the collar from the middle and out. Drape a shoulder over the edge of the ironing board. Work the iron from the shoulder to the back and down. Iron sleeves from the cuffs up to the shoulders.
Pants: Iron pants from the waist to the leg. Start with turning pockets inside out and ironing the pockets. Drape the pants on the board and iron the waist. Then lay the pants on the board with the legs neatly stacked on top of each other, making sure the seams line up. Fold the top leg over the waist and iron the bottom leg. Turn the pants over and repeat.
Skirts and Dresses: Iron from the collar down. If your dress has a collar and sleeves, you can follow the same protocol of collared shirts. Drape the skirt over the board and iron from the bottom up to the waist. If there are buttons, be careful as you iron around the buttons. If there are ruffles in the skirt, iron the on the inside of the skirt to not mess up the ruffle design.

Step Six: Follow Proper Ironing Safety.

Keep iron away from children.
Let iron cool for at least ten minutes before putting away.
Consider purchasing an iron with safety features.
Do not leave a hot iron face down.
Treat any burns quickly.

Grass Stains: To get out a grass stain, scrub with liquid dish soap. If this does not work, and you are looking for something a little stronger, create a solution that is ½ water and ½ hydrogen peroxide. Let this soak, and watch as the grass stains disappear!
Mud Stains: The worst thing you can do with a mud stain is try to scrub it out while still wet. This will create an even bigger mess! Instead, wait until the mud dries, and then brush off what you can. Treat the rest of the stain with a mixture of Borax and water, and wash immediately.
Bodily Fluid Stains (urine, feces, or vomit): It is important to soak any article of clothing with this type of stain in cool water, so as not to enhance the smell. You can then wash the item with a mixture of 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide and 1/2 cup baking soda in the washing machine. Good as new!
